Storing, Jointing and Laying of Ductile Iron Pipes
The installation of Ductile Iron pipe line consists of the following procedures:
-
Trenching
-
Sand Bedding
-
Laying
-
Jointing
-
Back filling

Trenching

Excavation is done for making trenches for laying of DI Pipes. The trenching is done as recommended in IS 12288.
Sand Bedding
The surface of the trench is cleared of any rocks and the surface is made even by sand filling so as to create a cushioning layer for the pipe to protect it from any damage.
Laying
The DI pipes are lowered down in the trench with the help of labour or cranes.
Jointing
The socket and spigot ends of DI Pipes are cleaned thoroughly in order to remove any foreign substance. Rubber Gaskets are inserted into the sockets of the DI Pipes and the two Ductile Iron Pipes are joined together by pushing the spigot end of one pipe into the socket end of the other DI pipe. The rubber gasket seals the joint of the pipes.
Back Filling
Once the complete DI Pipe line is installed, the trench is backfilled with sand upto the road level. This backfill acts as a cushioning layer and absorbs the load of the vehicles or any other traffic which may go over this installation area. In areas with very heavy traffic, the trenches may be covered with reinforced concrete blocks so as to protect the DI Pipe line from damage.
